The case

Squash is the cheapest court sport a city can add.

Four walls, a floor and a light. No ice plant, no turf cycle, no field. Two courts fit inside the footprint of one gym bay in a building Surrey already owns and staffs.

01
The space already exists

Two courts fit inside a standard gym bay. Surrey's recreation centres have floor area that needs no new building envelope.

02
The one option here is private, and may not last

Sandcastle Fitness is Surrey's only squash facility today, and it's private. TODO_CONTENT: a February 2025 published letter reported it may be redeveloped — confirm its current status directly before citing this on the live site.

03
It is cheap to operate

No ice, no turf, no field maintenance. Court booking revenue covers operating cost at modest utilisation.

04
It suits the whole age range

Indoor, low-impact, year-round, and playable well into later life. Racquet sports draw the widest age band of any court sport.

Richmond, Vancouver, and Burnaby all offer squash at a public recreation centre, free or low-cost.
